A panel discussion on data-driven storytelling, co-hosted by NORC and the Communications Network Chicago.
About this Event

Join a panel discussion on data-driven storytelling on February 17 from 5:30-7:30 PM at NORC’s downtown office. Learn how local, representative data can strengthen your communications work and support mission-driven goals. The panel will be followed by a networking reception with fellow Chicago area communications professionals.
Despite its rich diversity, Chicago organizations and decision makers often lack a full understanding of residents’ perspectives, needs, and lived experiences. Without access to frequent, reliable information from city residents, organizations are left to guess about community priorities and behaviors, hampering efforts to improve quality of life for all Chicagoans, particularly those whose voices are usually least heard.
ChicagoSpeaks, NORC’s representative panel, fill this critical gap by amplifying Chicagoans’ voices. The panel surveys 1,000+ residents four times a year on key issues like education, health care, housing, public safety, and immigration, generating timely insights to inform storytelling, policy, and public debate.
This event will open with a brief overview of ChicagoSpeaks and highlights from recent quarterly surveys, followed by a moderated panel discussion on how data can support credible storytelling, strengthen trust, and enhance community engagement.

Panelists:

  • Jen Axelrod, Vice President for Community Impact at The Chicago Community Trust, will share a funder’s perspective on the value and impact of ChicagoSpeaks.
  • Daniel Anello, President and CEO of KidsFirst Chicago, will discuss how ChicagoSpeaks data supported gathering insights from Chicago residents on various topics.
  • John Chase, Deputy Metro Editor at the Chicago Tribune, will discuss how journalists use local data to strengthen reporting and build trust with readers.
  • Ashani Johnson Turbes, Vice President at NORC and co-Director of ChicagoSpeaks, will moderate the discussion.
