Jamie Monck:
From being a child banging on pots and pans with chopsticks to clamoring for attention on a plastic toy guitar, classical guitarist Jamie Monck’s music begins from a place of exploration and creativity. Monck’s expansive repertoire has been described by Eliot Fisk as, “Conquering not just Everest, but the whole Himalayan Mountain Range.” He is an advocate for pieces off the beaten path (and also the Bach Chaconne). Much of Jamie’s repertoire seeks to explore musical structures and ideas that came before us in a way that invites both the performer and the listener to consider their past experiences and memories.
Recent performance highlights include apperances at the 21c Guitar Festival, the Lexington Bach Marathon, the University of Georgia, Tufts University, the Ball State University New Music Festival, Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago, the University of Louisville Guitar Festival, New Music Gathering, and more.
Jamie follows in the footsteps of Segovia, Bream, Fisk, and others through his commitment to commissioning new works for solo guitar. During the 2022-23 season, he premiered new works by Javier Contreras, Andrew M Rodriguez, and Liam Ritz. In 2024 he will be performing in Louisville, Lexington, Chicago, Dublin and London.
His project “dark is a way” is a collection of pieces for solo electric guitar composed for him by Gulli Bjornsson, Isaach Roth Blumfield, Yaz Lancaster, James May, Andrew M Rodriguez, and Cassie Wieland. The full recording of the project is available on Bandcamp.
Also available on Bandcamp is “the sun also rises,” the culmination of a multi-year collaboration with fellow New England Conservatory graduate Bosba. The project includes the title piece, “the sun also rises,” a major work completed in the hot and endless summer of 2020.
When he’s not pumping nylon, Jamie loves flowers, Saul Leiter, Nami, Dani de Moron, Virginia Hanusik, and Lewis Hamilton. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his partner Erin and his pooch Basil.
Jamie plays guitars built for him by Stephan Connor, Rachel Rosenkrantz, and Gracilliano Perez.

Hannah A Barnes:
Hannah A Barnes is a Montréal-based composer, conductor, and performer. Her compositional interests are centred around creating interlocking cycles of works that pursue common goals through different means, or the inverse. Musical materials that are mercurial, off-kilter, and seemingly incompatible are of most significant interest to her work. Recent projects include a piece for prepared harp composed for and at the Darmstadt Summer Courses, a piano/percussion work for Flannau Duo, and a large ensemble work for McGill University's Contemporary Music Ensemble. Her work takes inspiration from her diverse interests and experiences, including studying trumpet through her undergraduate years, 13 years of experience as a competitive championship-level Irish dancer, a teenage rebellion with the electric guitar, a minor in Irish studies, ongoing experience in traditional Irish music, a devotion to 20th century Modernism, and a love of polyphony throughout musical history.
Currently a DMus student at McGill University studying with Prof. Jean Lesage and Prof. Philippe Leroux, Hannah completed a Master’s degree with distinction in composition at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois (MM ’21, BM ’19) with additional studies in conducting with Prof. Michael Lewanski. Creative collaboration is central to her artistic practice. She has worked closely with soloists, including oboist Kyle Bruckmann, guitarist Jesse Langen, hornist Tarre Nelson, vocalist Joanna Mieleszko, percussionist Alexander Garde, pianist Ian Pace, and the clarinet/saxophone duo Garden Unit to develop new works. She has conducted her own work and premieres of works by other composers with Ensemble Dal Niente in the DePaul and Dal Niente Summer Residency for New Music. She has participated in summer festivals, including the DePaul and Dal Niente Summer Residency for New Music, the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP), the SPLICE Institute, the Darmstadt Summer Courses, and the Yarn/Wire Institute. Hannah’s music has been presented at venues including the Darmstadt Summer Courses, the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in Manhattan, the Eastman School of Music, City University London, and various venues in Chicago and Montréal. Her electric guitar piece, "Negative Capability," was presented in a two-player re-reading (as "Negative Capability II") at the 2022 Omaha Under the Radar Festival in Omaha, Nebraska in collaboration with Jesse Langen. She received an Honorable Mention in the 2021 Morton Gould Young Composer's Award competition for her work “five images.” Her debut portrait album, “Negative Capability,” will be released in November 2024.
Hannah is also the director of the rhythm is image new music initiative, in which she performs and conducts, emphasizing experimental performance practices. Teaching is also important to Hannah; she has taught theory to high schoolers at the Chicago Music Academy, music majors at DePaul University, and various students at McGill University. She lives in Montréal with her terrier Kaylee, and maintains a strong connection to her roots in Chicago.

rhythm is image:
rhythm is image is a new, Chicago- and Montréal-based contemporary music initiative directed by composer-performer Hannah A Barnes. We explore the intersection of sound, medium and concept in music. Our work focuses on provocative music that originates locally, nationally, and internationally. We are fascinated by the interconnection between composers of different cultures and perspectives, and particularly those who look across artistic boundaries to find unique modes of expression.
rhythm is image was founded by Hannah A Barnes as a nascent new music project called Purposeless Play at DePaul University in 2019.
