By what strange alchemy could a boy, born into poverty in Bridgeton in the east end of Glasgow, go on to become one of Europe’s greatest piano virtuosi? At the age of 9 he was the organist of a Gorbals church; at the age of 14 he was the star student at the Frankfurt Conservatoire; at the age of 16 he was the most favoured pupil of Franz Liszt. His early piano recitals captivated Europe with their courage and virtuosity, leading to a stellar career as a concert pianist. The life of Frederic Lamond is inspirational, a story of how a precociously-talented boy was nurtured and developed by a working-class family to become one of Glasgow’s greatest musical sons.
Raymond Thomson was Deputy Director of Lifelong Learning for the University of Strathclyde with responsibility for quality in teaching and learning. He has Doctoral Degrees in both Philosophy and Music. He is especially interested in the power of music and the cultural arts to effect democratic change and has presented papers on this topic in Spain, Finland, France, Sweden and Ireland. A former Secretary-General of the largest university continuing education network in Europe (EUCEN), he is a founding member of the Bridgeton Library Local History Group.
