About this Event
In a current moment where arts and culture organizations continue to face systemic threats, grassroots community arts centers like La Peña are vital spaces for exploring cultural history and imagining political resistance amid the threat of rising fascism.
All proceeds from this event will support La Peña’s decolonial and anti-imperialist arts and culture programming!
We’ll be joined by Freaky Tales writer/director Ryan Fleck (whose father is a long-time member of the La Peña Community Chorus!) along with members of the cast, to watch the film, followed by a discussion on the importance of local community organizing and grassroots cultural institutions in the fight against fascism.
All are welcome. Seating will be theater-style. For accessibility requests, please contact us at least one week in advance. Email us at [email protected]
About the Film
The action comedy film Freaky Tales packs sweet nostalgia with a heavy dose of anti-fascist East Bay energy. Set in the summer of 1987, an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teenage punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector embark on a collision course in Oakland, California.
Starring Pedro Pascal and featuring East Bay legends including Tom Hanks, Too Short, Marshawn Lynch, and Angus Cloud, as well as local cast members Sedrick Cabrera, Demario "Symba" Driver, Freaky Tales brings together four fantastical tales that journey through real-life events and East Bay historic places –including La Peña Cultural Center!
