FORUM 3: Performance as an act of resistance; Dance, Music and SubculturesThe position of the performing arts in society is necessarily a fragile and ephemeral one: they exist only briefly in time and are entirely dependent on the living bodies of performers to bring them to life. But this is also their great strength: as they constantly require new performers and new performances, they can act as a living tradition and an index of social values and cultural identity. In recent consensus, this inclusive and multi-faceted expression of cultural identity provides fertile ground for positive social change, and so protection and preservation of freedom of expression, and the state’s role in facilitating opportunities and investment for different cultural expressions, constitute the foundation for community dialogue and possibilities for peace.
This FORUM aims to provide an opportunity for reflection and discussion on the power of dance, music, and subcultures to challenge and remodel our perceived understanding on culture, art, and possibilities for peace.
