Founded in 1994 in Marseille, Ensemble Télémaque has become a vital champion of contemporary music. With a strong commitment to aesthetic openness, the ensemble regularly commissions new works from both regional and international composers. Under the artistic direction of Raoul Lay, Télémaque has embraced bold interdisciplinary collaborations, bringing contemporary music into dialogue with theatre, dance, and circus arts.
This spirit of innovation has led to partnerships with leading artists across disciplines and has expanded the reach of the ensemble’s work. Performing on major stages in France and abroad, Télémaque has appeared at festivals such as Présences in Paris, the Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, and the Venice Biennale. Alongside its concert activity, the ensemble places great importance on outreach, particularly through projects that introduce young audiences to new musical aesthetics in creative and participatory ways.
Since 2013, Ensemble Télémaque has been based at the Pôle Instrumental Contemporain (PIC) in L’Estaque, a dedicated space that serves as both a laboratory for creation and a place of exchange with the public. There, the ensemble develops its projects through rehearsals, residencies, workshops, and performances. Over three decades, Ensemble Télémaque has built a distinctive profile that combines artistic innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and committed engagement with audiences, affirming its role as a leading voice for contemporary music in France and beyond.
