About this Event

Coconut Head Generation (2023, FR/NG) is part of a screening series presented by artist and filmmaker Frank Sweeney in response to his new film installation Go Ye Afar at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, 03 October — 21 November, 2025.

Alain Kassanda’s Coconut Head Generation is a powerful observational documentary that reclaims the disparaging term used to dismiss Nigerian youth as "brainless youth", illustrating that they are anything but. Students gather weekly for a film club at the University of Ibadan—the country’s oldest university, still shaped by its colonial legacy—where post-film, sometimes-heated conversations revolve around politics, feminism, and identity. Coconut Head Generation presents an intellectually vibrant environment, where spirited debates challenge generational stereotypes and reveal a youth collective deeply attuned to Nigeria’s socio-political realities.

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is an artists’ studio complex and contemporary art gallery in Dublin City Centre. Artists are supported through the provision of high-quality affordable studio space, professional development opportunities and the connection to a community of artists, peers and international networks. The Gallery presents five exhibitions annually of newly commissioned work by Irish and international artists. This is supported by a programme of talks, tours, screenings and workshops. We produce the annual Dublin Art Book Fair as a platform for artist books, independent publishers and an expansive curated programme of talks and events.
