Celebrate the magic of the spoken word and awaken your inner Seanchaí at Fable Family Festival.
Immerse yourself in an authentic storytelling experience this Autumn as young and old are invited to re-connect with their storytelling roots at Fable Family Festival. Fable celebrates the power of storytelling, inspiring the next generation of seanchaí by re-imagining the traditional storytelling experience in ambitious and imaginative ways that engage young and curious audiences.
On 21 September, The James Joyce Centre will host a programme of workshops and mythic tales and songs for little ears at our kids literary cabaret.
On September 22 begin the day in the Irish Film Institute Temple bar as IFI Family, presents Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs are showing classic Walt Disney animation Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first ever animated feature film. Based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, the mouse house drew together an extensive team working with cells to produce memorable drawn characters, hearkening back to the Grimm simple concept of good and evil, while using colour and an award-winning soundtrack to make the film appeal to all ages. There have been numerous Snow Whites since, but none as simply memorable and groundbreaking as this was on release in 1937.
After the screening, check out all the action at Fable in Meeting House Square! A free day of family fun that celebrates the magical art of storytelling.
The “Fable" show will retell Irish myths and legends for young ears, as seanchaís and colourful characters bring colourful tales of the Caorthannach (a monstrous dragon monster), The Famous Cú Chulainn, The Children of Lir,The Fairy Queen and the cheeky Puca to the Ark outdoor stage in the heart of Temple Bar.
With stories from children’s writer Dave Rudden, costumes from Claire Garvey, and designs from Kiki Na, this free show brings story, dance, and theatrics together to bring the rich culture of Ireland’s folkloric stories to life.
After the show, children will be encouraged to harness the spooky sounds of nature with the Morrigan’s “Sounds of the Forest”, play games with the cheeky Pooka, and cast out the cobwebs with our resident good witch Cailleach, as she brings us on a journey of discovery about inner magic through spells and mantras to inspire positive wellbeing.
Off-stage, Meeting House Square will be a hive of activity with face-painters and walkabout interactive characters. Don’t forget to bring bring your library card as Dublin City Library will have a pop up library where you can take out books and sign up for your library card.
Fable Family Festival will have its own podcast (from September 14h) where world-renowned Seanchaí Eddie Lenihan shares stories of “other folk”, alongside new tales read by Singer Jerry Fish and actress Mary Murray.
