Face to Face with Gorillas in Rwanda
I think Rwanda is currently my favorite African country. The authentic kindness of the people to share their traditions is heart warming. Playing drums with them, learning the local work songs while we pounded coffee, and cooking with the mama were all beautiful shared experiences. What I was touched most by were the number of people there who want to do things to better the world through sustainability, education, and green projects.
We've combined two highlights. One is the time spent with the gorillas. We are able to get within a few feet of these incredible animals. Depending on his schedule, we try to get Francois to be our lead guide into the gorilla families. Francois was one of the rangers that accompanied Diane Fossey during her work to protect the gorillas. His stories as well as his ability to actually talk to the gorillas are remarkable all in themselves. Trekking to find the gorillas is an experience you'll never forget. Yes, it is extremely expensive but they use the money to pay the people who were once poachers to be the scouts to keep track of the gorillas. That way the animals stay alive and people are almost always guaranteed seeing the gorillas, because the guides have been up following them through the night. That's one part of the trip.
The second part will be in immerse in the culture of the village nearby. Red Rocks Rwanda established a community based tourism program that involves all the people of the village so tourists can get to know the people and their traditions and culture. During this week they are hosting a music festival and other great programs culminating in the gorilla naming ceremony of the new gorillas (which is growing since their idea of using poachers as guides) and a huge music festival.
