About this Event

This continuing education event reviews the functional and mental health impacts of divorce and separation on children in different developmental stages. Participants will discuss ethical concerns and issues related to working with families experiencing divorce and separation and review best practices. Specific Play Therapy interventions to support children in homes with divorce or separation will be introduced and participants will practice skills in integrative activities and through case discussion.

Training will be synchronous specialized Live Webinar only.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:

1. Describe a theoretical understanding of the impact of divorce

2. Identify ethical issues of working with divorced and separated families in Play Therapy

3. Practice use of specific Play Therapy skills and interventions to support children in families of divorce

4. Identify supportive Play Therapy based interventions to promote healthy functioning in the family system

5. Plan for how to resolve ethical concerns and dilemmas that emerge in Play Therapy practice with families experiencing divorce and separation

6. Discuss skills and strategies for navigating legal proceedings including responding to subpoenas, testifying, and communicating with legal professionals


Tentative Agenda:

9:00 am – 10:30 am – Impact of Divorce and Separation on child well-being and mental health

10:30 am – 12:00 pm – Ethical Concerns of working with separated/divorced families in Play Therapy

12:00 pm – 1:00 pm - Lunch

1:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Play Therapy Skills and Interventions to treat children from families experiencing divorce or separation

2:30 pm – 4:00 pm – Play Therapy intervention practice

Participation

A Time for Play Therapy Continuing Education events are professional trainings developed for master's level mental health clinicians and students. Prior Play Therapy knowledge and experience are helpful but not necessary to participate. Play Therapy credit available to mental health professionals and graduate students in a mental health program.


Handouts

Each registration for an A Time for Play Continuing Education includes limited time access to a Google Drive folders with handouts specific to the training. It also includes a folder of suggested readings of articles, book excerpts, and research that are specifically relevant to the Play Therapy training topic. Please make sure you are able to access and download the materials.


Virtual Attendance

Per APT guidelines, virtually attendees must keep your cameras on and be present and focused throughout the entire presentation. This guideline is especially important because there are several interactive activities and breakout discussions that require group participation.


Post-Test and Evaluation

Participants will be given a post-test and an anonymous evaluation to complete at the end of each training. Participants must attest to completing the evaluation and must meet a minimum score of 80% to receive Continuing Education credit.

Cancellation and refund policy

Registration refunds will NOT be made to parties who register but do not attend or do not request a refund from the organizer 24 hours in advance.

Participants requiring accommodations must submit a medical professional’s note specifying the required accommodations to [email protected] at least 7 days prior to any training for which they have registered.


Cancellation Policy

A Time for Play reserves the right to cancel any of these training in the event of unforeseen circumstances. If such a cancellation occurs, A Time for Play will attempt to notify registrants and refund all registration fees.


Continuing Education Credits

This Continuing Education event is acceptable for the purposes of license renewal for Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists in the state of Texas by fully complying with Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council guidelines and Texas Administrative Code RULE §781.501, RULE §681.142, & RULE §801.261

The Association for Play Therapy sets the credentialing standards for Play Therapists and approves applications for the Registered Play Therapist Credential. It is the responsibility of mental health professionals to check with their state board to determine if credit issued through an NBCC Approved Continuing Education Provider or an Association for Play Therapy approved provider of the play therapy CE is accepted for credit by their state board.
