In conjunction with our Art House Cinema screening of Stalker, Film Programming & Membership Manager Dan Santelli will host a 45-minute, spoiler-free pre-screening seminar on Andrei Tarkovsky’s perplexing and philosophically rich science-fiction meditation on faith, desire, and the limits of knowledge.Working under notoriously arduous conditions, Andrei Tarkovsky and his collaborators shaped Stalker through a protracted and troubled production that has since become the stuff of legend, including the near-total reshooting of the film and the physical toll of its hazardous locations. Among other subjects, Dan will contextualize Stalker within Tarkovsky’s filmography, examine its hypnotic visual style, and trace its lasting influence on contemporary cinema, from its imprint on slow cinema to its echoes in filmmakers as varied as Béla Tarr (Sátántangó) and Alex Garland (Annihilation).
Be sure to stick around after the movie for a post-screening discussion.
