About this Event

Join us for a seminar with Mojca M. Hočevar from the University of Ljubljana.

In her presentation, she will shed light on the challenges of compiling, editing, and publishing English-Slovenian dictionaries, both before and during the transition from print to digital resources. Through an analysis of existing English-Slovenian dictionaries, she will outline the typological characteristics of different print editions and highlight their significance for users. The study shows that the development of dictionaries and related resources has become highly dependent on digitisation and their free availability online. Among the most successful publications are bilingual dictionaries designed for learners of English. Around the turn of the millennium, there was a surge in the publication of new printed English-Slovenian dictionaries, culminating in the OXFORD-DZS Comprehensive English-Slovenian Dictionary. However, with the advent of the web, the demand for physical dictionaries began to decline sharply. Looking ahead, the compilation of dictionaries will probably rely increasingly on online resources, crowdsourcing, and the integration of AI-assisted editing tools.
