About this Event

Art as Resistance, Memory, and Celebration – Curated by Guylaine Conquet – Presented by Just Afro – with special performance by Lise Boula

Curated by Guylaine Conquet

This exhibition is more than a celebration of Black history—it serves as a vital space for preserving cultural memory and fostering transatlantic dialogue. Echoes of Diaspora will leave a lasting impact on the Atlanta community, forge new international partnerships, and enrich global conversations on race, history, and healing through the power of art.

Centered on themes of resistance, memory, and celebration, it highlights art as a powerful vehicle for healing and reclaiming history.

As Callanwolde is an educational institution, the Gallery offers workshops, artist talks, and interactive presentations about contemporary art during community events and school field trips. Many of the students that visit Callanwolde attend schools that receive Title I and Title III funding and are often lacking in arts enrichment opportunities.

The gallery space currently houses several Callanwolde dance classes, Summer camp classes, an annual holiday artists market, and serves as getting ready spaces for wedding parties who rent the venue for their ceremony and reception.

Arts For All

Since 1972, Callanwolde has been a significant presence in Atlanta’s arts community. Our 100-year-old campus is an inspiring place for students to learn, create, exhibit, and perform. We serve over 12,000 people each year through classes, performances, community engagement, gallery exhibitions, artist markets, and historic tours. Callanwolde provides high-quality classes in ceramics, textiles, dance, jewelry making, photography, painting and drawing, creative writing, and media craft. Our programs attract students of all ages, races, income levels, and abilities.

At the end of 2021, Callanwolde updated its mission to include increased support for underserved communities. We now provide free programing to students who qualify for Title I and Title III funding, veterans who live with PTSD, previously homeless adults and families, adults born with behavioral challenges, and low-income seniors.

Callanwolde provides access to art-making equipment and space for artists who would otherwise not be able to afford it. Our ceramics department has five gas kilns, seven electric kilns, and 25 throwing wheels. Our weaving department has 12 looms. Our campus touts an 850-square-foot Jewelry studio, 3,000 square feet of dance space, and a photography darkroom.

In addition to our art-making facilities, our 12-acre property features formal and natural gardens, a 550-seat amphitheater, and nature trails.

Callanwolde enriches lives by helping students learn and improve artistic skills in a supportive community. Our students gain knowledge that helps them succeed in their professional and vocational practices and engage in self-care.
