About this Event
We are delighted to invite you to our first ever network squash taster event. The event will take place at Swavesey Squash Club from 1pm - 5pm on Sunday 2nd February 2024.
The young people will get the opportunity to attend a squash workshop where they will learn the basics of the game, take part in a workshop about how to optimise the management of their diabetes during exercise and then to participate in a mini squash tournament.
All CYP above the age of 8 who have diabetes and live in the East of England are welcome to attend. Each young person is welcome to bring a sibling or a friend with them.
The cost of the event is £22.50 per person.
The squash training and tournament will be led by the lead coach from Swavesey Squash Club Ali Loke who is ranked as one of the top 100 squash players in the world.
The diabetes and exercise education will be delivered by diabetes health care professionals from the region.
Parents are welcome to stay and specate for the event - there are some very comfortable sofas on the balcony over looking the squash courts.
Tea and coffee will be provided.
What is squash?
Squash is a racket sport, similar to badminton or tennis, expect rather than hitting the ball over a net to your opponent, you hit it against a wall, so it bounces back into the same space again.
Not only is there the "front wall", which is the equivalent of the net, there are walls all around the court, on all four sides, which you can hit the ball against. This means there's plenty of angles and variety in the shot options.
Because both players are in the same space, there are also a lot of tactics around trying to get the best position on the court and moving your opponent into less good positions. The racket is similar to tennis but a bit smaller and lighter, and the ball is rubber, which warms up as you hit it and gets more bouncy.
Squash can be a fast-paced game, but it's also quite easy to pick up as a beginner.
There's a blend of fitness, strength, skill, and strategy, that make it a very dynamic sport. If you've never tried it before, we highly recommend you give it a go; you might find that it's a sport that you really enjoy!
Swavesey Squash ClubSwavesey Squash Club is a not-for-profit club just north of Cambridge. We have three courts and a welcoming friendly atmosphere. We love encouraging new people to try squash; especially those who haven't had the chance to try it before.
Ali Loke is the head coach at Swavesey Squash Club and is ranked in the world top 100. She will be assisted by two of the club's junior players, Charlie Wilson and Chris Edmond.
EquipmentSince the squash court floor is untreated wood (as this offers the best playing surface), specific shoes are required. Shoes need to be non-marking (white soled shoes are always non-marking, or other shoes may be labelled as such) and clean (wear another pair of shoes to the club, and change on arrival - keep your squash shoes as indoor only). Shoes suitable for badminton or volleyball are the most similar to squash shoes or other trainers with a non-marking sole that have been cleaned.
We have rackets, balls, and safety goggles (compulsory for junior players to endure eyes are protected) available to borrow at the club.Otherwise, comfortable clothes suitable for moving around, and a water bottle/snacks are all you need!
