Join us & East Kensington Neighborhood Arts for an afternoon of sounds designed to get you dancing and thinking!(in order of appearance)
Mariposas Galácticas:
Mariposas Galácticas is an 8-piece Cumbia Klezmer Punk band and cultural project based in Philadelphia, PA. Combining band members’ South American and Jewish ancestries, the band creates a unique diasporic sound that gets audiences everywhere dancing with rebellious joy. By honoring their Indigenous Andean musical ancestries, blended together with punkified ancient Jewish melodies, the band plays a mixture of original and classic tunes that span different languages, cultures, and genres. Las Mariposas have toured the east coast and collaborated with international acts such as the renowned Mexican rock band Los Cogelones and Argentinian Tropi-punk group Kumbia Queers. They have headlined the L.A.T.I.N. PunkFest in Philadelphia and NYC and continue to accompany their communities’ struggle for liberation everywhere from prominent stages to cultural, activist and community spaces.
Darling Damselfly:
"Darling Damselfly, a Philadelphia-based band, wants their most recent album, “Galapagos,” to get listeners thinking about humankind’s relationship with the planet — in the hopes of saving it.
Sammy Shuster (singer/songwriter) and Lexie Diallo — the two-person band’s violist — released “Galapagos” in October. The five-track album, which is available on Bandcamp, explores scientific phenomena from evolution to photosynthesis while prompting listeners to make connections to their own lives." - Jenny Roberts:Grid Magazine
Hodgepodge:
Since 2019, Philadelphia’s own Hodgepodge has been playing an eclectic mix of Persian funk, punk, and everything in between. Drawing musical influences from Tehran’s underground rock scene and lyrical influences from a wide range of Persian poetry, Hodgepodge’s sound blends dreamy atmospheric chord progressions with catchy hard-hitting riffs.
