About the Drumming Workshop - Seydou Kienou, Aboubacar Konate, Hans Sutton , Ansumana Suso, Mohamed Sangare
This workshop centers on the study of West African rhythms, with an emphasis on traditions from Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso. Attendees will engage with distinct rhythmic patterns, examining their origins and cultural significance to gain a richer appreciation of their traditional roles. It is structured to be welcoming and accessible, offering a rewarding experience for both novices and seasoned musicians alike.
About the Dance Workshop - Brenda Mayr
This workshop focuses on learning Guinean dance, Guinean Ballet style, blending traditional elements with contemporary movements that create a dynamic and engaging experience. Participants will explore specific rhythms, delving into their history and traditional uses to deepen their understanding of the cultural context. The workshop is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that both beginners and experienced dancers can enjoy and benefit from the learning process.
The objectives of the workshops are:
To create a safe space for expressing, connecting, and releasing through our bodies.
To develop physical skills including strength, flexibility, and coordination.
To explore the relationship between music and body movement with live drumming.
To learn specific choreographies/phrases for each rhythm studied in the class.
To cultivate improvisation skills.
While it is recommended to attend all the classes to maintain continuity in the learning process, the workshop is structured flexibly to accommodate those who may join as pop-ups. This allows participants to benefit from each session individually while still being part of the overall learning experience.
