About the artist:
Dr Justin Coombes is an artist, writer and educator. His work takes many forms, including poetry, drawing, watercolour, collage, photography, performance and film. His critical writing centres on poetry and its relationship to visual art. In recent years, his central theme has been the search for enlightenment, especially in spiritual, political and romantic forms.
Justin was born in Devon, UK in 1977 and lives and works in London. He has exhibited extensively worldwide, including at: Kyoto Art Centre, Japan; Onassis Stegi, Athens; Sotheby’s, London; Griffin Museum of Photography, Boston; and LM Projects, Los Angeles. His artwork is held in public and corporate collections including the British Government, Ernst & Young Global Limited, Soho Beach House, the Linde Group and the David Roberts Art Foundation. His writing has been published widely, including in Visual Studies (Routledge), the London Evening Standard and Apollo.
Prizes include the BOC Group Emerging Artist Award and the Flash Forward photographers' award from the Magenta Foundation, Canada. Grants include Arts Council England, The Eaton Fund, Fenton Arts Trust, the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Oxford University's Research Centre in the Humanities. Justin holds degrees from the University of Oxford, Goldsmiths College, University of London and the Royal College of Art. He is a Senior Studio Tutor on the BFA and research programmes at the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.
