If you were a film head of a certain age in 2001, like high school through mid-twenties, you learned a handful of facts about Donnie Darko. One, it somehow involved a plane crashing into a house (this was just after 9/11). Two, it had a cover of Mad World on the soundtrack that was immediately inescapable. And three, the plot was so obtuse and convoluted that just understanding it was impressive (this was just before Lost).
Those three facts also meant that it became a gigantic cult hit after it left theatres — which it did quite rapidly, see point one. The story of a troubled teenager who meets a mysterious figure in a warped, terrifying rabbit costume and believes he has to travel in time to save the world, Donnie Darko sparked a wave of thoughtful independent genre cinema, pushing indies out of their bubble of fringe rom-coms and coming of age dramas and into bizarre, outre experimentation. And in hindsight, it’s a lot more lucid than its early reputation implied.
