DMLab North-West: Accessible Music-Making HACKATHON

Come spend a day at Manchester Hackspace creating ideas, tools and prototypes that tackle barriers to music-making.

We’ll be bringing people together to form teams and make something that could help open up music-making for someone. That might mean adapting an instrument, designing a new interface, building a piece of hardware, creating a piece of software, or inventing something completely unexpected.

There’s also an optional meetup at Manchester Hackspace at 7pm on Saturday 25 April for anyone who wants to visit the space, meet teammates, and get ideas flowing ahead of the day.

We want a mix of people and skills: Disabled musicians, makers, coders, artists, designers, tinkerers, problem-solvers, electronics people, 3D printing people, music theory nerds, enthusiastic beginners, brilliant team players, and makers of cups of tea. You do not need to be a tech wizard, a music wizard, or any kind of wizard to take part — though wizards are, of course, also welcome.

We’d especially love Disabled musicians (and wannabe musicians) to join us and bring the barriers they’d like help tackling.

We’ll provide equipment such as Arduino, ESP32s, sensors, wires and other bits and pieces, but please bring your own laptop if you think you’ll need one, along with any specific materials you’d like to use that we may not have. We’ll also provide pizza and other refreshments.

• The entrance to Manchester Hackspace has a small step, with a ramp to make this accessible.
• The rest of the building has level access or a ramp, and there is an accessible toilet space.
