19.30 = “STARLET,” directed by Sean Baker, 2012, 103 minutes
A poignant exploration of an unlikely friendship set against the backdrop of the San Fernando Valley, Baker is known for his empathetic and realistic portrayals of marginalized characters and presents a narrative that is as much about human connection as it is about the complexities of life.
Starring Dree Hemmingway - the great-granddaughter of the renowned author Ernest Hemmingway, and Besedka Johnson, who for 70 years had dreamt of playing a part in a film - a dream Sean Baker forfilled since she passed away a year after "STARLET" came into this world at the age of 87. It's the first feature in Bakers "Sex Worker Trilogy", which also includes "TANGERINE" (2015), and "THE FLORIDA PROJECT" (2017). The focus on this topic is also at the center of more resent films of his like "RED ROCKET" (2021) and the Palme d'Or and Oscar-winning masterpiece "ANORA" (2024).
