While recent years have seen the revival of the global radical left - and most recently a huge upsurge in protest in response to Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza - it remains the case that the primary beneficiaries of the crisis of representative democracy and neoliberalism has been the disaster nationalism of the far right.
While much of the focus is on leaders such as Donald Trump, Jair Bolsonaro, Giorgia Meloni, Rodrigo Duterte, and Javier Milei - the phenomenon of disaster nationalism is propelled through the vast networks of social media and fueled by far-right influencers, and the background conditions of social despair, fear, and isolation.
In this live episode of the Politics Theory Other, Richard Seymour will address the root causes of disaster nationalism, how the left should respond to it and whether what we are seeing is the emergence of a 21st century iteration of fascism.
