About this Event

Did you know that 50 % of UK ponds have been lost in the 20th Century and a huge 2/3 of freshwater species can be found in ponds!

Ponds are more than just small water bodies; they are dynamic ecosystems that play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity, managing water resources and contributing to a healthy environment.

Frogs, toads and fish may be the first creatures that come to mind when you think of pond life. Beneath the surface though, ponds are home to an incredible variety of aquatic animals. Despite their small size, they can support more biodiversity than larger waterbodies, including lakes and rivers.

Explore this beautiful habitat and meet some of the invertebrates and amphibians that live and forage in ponds. Try your hand at a scientific surveying technique to record the species we find.

  • Enjoy a relaxed evening in Greenwich Park surrounded by the gentle splashing of water.
  • Learn about this important habitat and how they are vital many invertebrates, birds, bats and mammals in the Royal Parks.
  • Find out more about the water quality in our wildlife pond and how water quality affects biodiversity in freshwater habitats.
  • Have a go at pond dipping – a scientific surveying technique to find and record the species we find.
