Inspired by an article about the rise of working-class fashion photographers in Swinging London, this chilling psychological mystery is Michael Antonioni’s first film in English. Already a darling of the arthouse scene, the filmmaker’s offers commentary on the thriller genre, operating on a thematic and symbolic level. As it follows a David Bailey-like photographer (David Hemmings) who may have witnessed a murder, the movie captures a London on the brink of social change and gentrification, juxtaposing the new youth culture with the establishment. Starring Vanessa Redgrave and featuring models Veruschka, Jane Birkin and Peggy Moffitt, and an on-screen performace by the Yardbirds, with a groovy original score by a young Herbie Hancock.
