About this Event
Trio Sprout is Alex Guy – violin, Maria Scherer Wilson – cello, and Wayne Horvitz – piano.
In jazz the piano trio means piano, bass and drums. In classical music a piano trio is, of course, piano with violin and cello. Trio Sprout takes the format of the latter, while embracing an aesthetic based in contemporary music with a heavy dose of improvisation, re-imagining the classic piano trio for the 21st century.
The repertoire includes new arrangements of existing compositions by Horvitz and Guy, plus new compositions by Horvitz composed for this specific ensemble. Depending on the place and context, Ms. Guy may sing, and electronics might enter the mix. Only time will tell.
Recipient of the 2019 American Prize in Orchestral Composition and the 2016 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, composer and pianist Wayne Horvitz’s work ranges from the recent premiere of a concerto for the Seattle Symphony (featuring guitarist Bill Frisell) to his long association with a myriad of artists including Butch Morris, Gus Van Sant, John Zorn (Naked City), Robin Holcomb, Reggie Watts.
