Debut show of the Trio Sprout: This contemporary take on a classical trio challenges expectation in their first concert!
About this Event

Trio Sprout is Alex Guy – violin, Maria Scherer Wilson – cello, and Wayne Horvitz – piano.

In jazz the piano trio means piano, bass and drums. In classical music a piano trio is, of course, piano with violin and cello. Trio Sprout takes the format of the latter, while embracing an aesthetic based in contemporary music with a heavy dose of improvisation, re-imagining the classic piano trio for the 21st century.

The repertoire includes new arrangements of existing compositions by Horvitz and Guy, plus new compositions by Horvitz composed for this specific ensemble. Depending on the place and context, Ms. Guy may sing, and electronics might enter the mix. Only time will tell.

Recipient of the 2019 American Prize in Orchestral Composition and the 2016 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, composer and pianist Wayne Horvitz’s work ranges from the recent premiere of a concerto for the Seattle Symphony (featuring guitarist Bill Frisell) to his long association with a myriad of artists including Butch Morris, Gus Van Sant, John Zorn (Naked City), Robin Holcomb, Reggie Watts.

“there's nobody else out there I hear even attempting to cover some kind of similar range, and do it so convincingly” — All About Jazz

Alex Guy is a Seattle-based violinist, violist, singer and composer, and is the leader and principal songwriter of Led To Sea, a magnetic trio that fuses classical, pop and experimental music. Alex has also composed extensively for dance, film and theater, and has performed and collaborated with many notable bandleaders, composers, improvisers and musicians in the Pacific NW and beyond, including Angel Olsen, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, Wayne Horvitz, Mirah, Sera Cahoone, Jherek Bischoff, Ahamefule Oluo and Laura Veirs.

Violoncellist Maria Scherer Wilson is a multi-genre musician, recording artist and teacher, known for her versatility and willingness to step outside the box and connect deeply with those around her. She holds a Master of Music in Violoncello Performance from The University of Texas at Austin, and a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Evansville, and has worked with Florence Henderson, Bernadette Peters, Ahamefule J. Oluo, Jherek Bischoff, Sigur Ros, Eyvind Kang, and Hauschka. She currently creates with Wayne Horvitz, Alex Guy, the Invisible Composers Lab, Passenger String Quartet, Penta Quartet, and Cascadia Conducting Orchestras (principal). In 2016, Maria began her studies in the healing arts, and is now a Certified Yoga Teacher (200-RYT), Meditation Teacher, Sound Healer and Reiki Master.
