MUCKLE FLUGGA
'Garishly alive’ (Guardian)
‘Extraordinary’ (The Scotsman)
‘Awe-inspiring’ (Financial Times)
‘A thing of magic’ (The Skinny)
Life on a remote island is turned upside down by a stranger's arrival, testing bonds of family and tradition and leaving a young dreamer's future hanging in the balance.
It’s no ordinary living on the rugged isle of Muckle Flugga. The elements run riot and the very rocks that shape the place begin shift under their influence. The only human inhabitants are the lighthouse keeper and his otherworldly son, Ouse – them and the occasional lodger to keep the wolf from the door.
When Firth, a chaotic writer, quests in from the capital, the limits of the world the keeper and his son cling to begin to crumble. A tug of war ensues between Firth and the lighthouse keeper for Ouse’s affections – and his future. As old and new ways collide, and life-changing decisions loom, what will the tides leave standing in their wake?
Emma Glass was born in Swansea. She studied English Literature and Creative Writing at the University of Kent, then decided to become a nurse. Her debut novel Peach has been translated into seven languages and was long-listed for the International Dylan Thomas Prize.
MRS JEKYLL
‘heartbreaking and seductive’ (Sophie Mackintosh)
‘Sensual, chilling, powerfully immersive’ (Esther Freud)
‘Incisive and mercurial’ (Jessica Andrews)
‘An immensely talented young writer ... her fearlessness renews one’s faith in the power of literature.’ (George Saunders)
Schoolteacher Rosy Winter is dying. Her husband Charlie offers all the relief he can. Rosy's sister-in-law, Sally, offers none.
But Rosy feels something growing in her. A hard knot in her chest. Beyond the homeopathic remedies, the dinner party obligations, the snatched whispers on wards and in staffrooms, a force - murderous, feminine, feverish - is stirring within her...
Atmospheric and lusciously told, Mrs Jekyll reframes Stevenson's classic story of human duality in the present day, as one woman contends with a terminal diagnosis - and unearths the effervescence of a life suppressed. A story of power and powerlessness, light and dark, life and death, Mrs Jekyll embraces the paradoxes and paroxysms of modern womanhood, in a story every bit as gripping as the original.
