Dave Burrell:
Distinguished composer-pianist Dave Burrell is an African-American performing artist of singular stature on the international contemporary music scene.
Standing out as a leading figure of the New York avant-garde scene in the second half of the '60s, Burrell quickly established himself as one of the most innovative pianists, collaborating with the emerging leaders in contemporary jazz and joining the groups of Marion Brown, Pharoah Sanders and Archie Shepp. He has played and recorded, among others, with Giuseppi Logan, Sunny Murray, Albert Ayler, Grahan Moncur III, Byard Lancaster, Sirone, Alan Silva, Clifford Thornton, Roscoe Mitchell. His dynamic compositions with blues and gospel roots recall the tradition of Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson and Duke Ellington, as well as avant garde composers Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane." Dave Burrell is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including National Endowment for the Arts, Vision Festival Lifetime Achievement Award, Philadelphia Music Foundation, William J. Cooper Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, Pennsylvania State Council on The Arts, MidAtlantic Foundation, John Garcia Gensel Award, and the Pew Fellowship in Jazz Composition.
Paul Giallorenzo Trio:
Originally from Long Island, NY, Paul Giallorenzo is a Chicago-based improviser, composer, producer, and sound designer using piano, synthesizer, keyboards, and electronics in a diverse range of contexts with a wide array of Chicago and international musicians in improvised, avant-jazz, experimental, and electro/acoustic music, performing regularly locally and throughout North America and Europe. Giallorenzo’s work has been praised for its “inside-out” nature – his ability to push the boundaries of “conventional” jazz toward more freedom but also, on the other side, to bring a measure of structure to more avant-garde material. Writing in the online journal Point Of Departure, John Litweiler said, “His solos and aggressive duets are gems of after-Bop, after-Bley melody,” while AllAboutJazz.org lauded music that “smudges the lines between the tradition and the avant-garde.” His work can be found on the Chicago-based Delmark Records and Austin-based Astral Spirits labels, as well as various other imprints including Leo Records (UK), Not Two Records (Poland), and 482 Music (NY). Giallorenzo is the Artistic Director of the intermedia arts organization Homeroom and a co-founder and programmer of the music venue/art gallery Elastic Arts, producing hundreds of creative music concerts and art events in Chicago since 2001.
Silvervest:
Imagine Sun Ra as Joni Mitchell's pianist, or Laurie Anderson writing songs for Billie Holiday and Slam Stewart. That potent and eclectic poise is what the long-standing upright bass and voice duo, Silvervest, offers. The Montreal based Silvervest is the project of Nicolas Caloia and Kim Zombik that cruxes intimacy at the heart of their compositions. Playing in the field of storytelling, pop, soundscapes, jazz and jangling, Silvervest offers fresh music that is intuitive and unique. They place primary importance on creation that has structure yet allows following their ears into wider exploratory spaces. This potent duo, ever open to possibilities, explores the nuts and bolts of humanity’s mortal coil with tenderness, humour and tunefulness.
Since 1990 Nicolas Caloia has worked to develop new music based on textures to channel improvisations. Since 1986, Kim Zombik has been expressing collective states of heart with her voice, through different genres of music. Their goal is music that is both improvised and composed, jazz, pop and avant garde. The vibrant melodic music toggles between swagger and sweetness, caressing and careening, yet remains unset and always generous.
