Uncompromising collaboration by spoken word artists and musicians.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spoken word, instant composing and jazz intertwine in SPOKEN OPUS, as part of our concert series DATSKAT. In collaboration with wordsmith Manu van Kersbergen we invite a number of wordsmiths and musicians for each edition to join forces on stage, without any rehearsals or pre-arrangements. This edition features Myriem El-Kaddouri, Silke Veld, Mahat Arab, Teis Semey and Kotokid.
Myriem El-Kaddouri
This Belgian-Moroccan lawyer, poet and word artist made her debut at the Museum for Circular Economy in Antwerp, with a poetry installation on the theme of contradictory information. Last year she became the West Flemish slam poetry champion. Her first poetry volume is expected this summer. Her writing comes from a radical softness, with subjects such as identity, society, psyche and relationships.
Silke Veld
Silke Veld is a Dutch language singer-songwriter from Enschede. Her love for singing started at the age of nine. Silke’s music is about all the normal and abnormal things in her life that evoke feelings in her. With her understated anecdotes, interchanged here and there with big questions about life, Silke will swing you back and forth and will only stop when the show is done. Silke’s debut EP appeared in 2023.
Mahat Arab
Mahat Aarab is a spoken word artist from Arnhem who has moved to Amsterdam not so long ago. As a child of Somalian refugees, his poetry often focuses on identity and uneasiness, but also the humor that we can encounter in strange surroundings and awkward situations. In 2021 one of his poems won the ILFU story contest, and in 2023 a film adaptation of this poem won the award for best Dutch poetry film.
