Jade, a young boxer; Mica, clerk and aspiring actor – a story spanning a century of South London life: identity, inheritance and inspiration
About this Event

A site-specific play with live music, inspired by legendary boxer Sir Henry Cooper, Dancing In The Mirror is the story of Jade, a young boxer who grew up in care, and Mica, a clerk and aspiring actor learning to find his voice. When Jade discovers her estranged father is still alive, their paths cross and recross in a story about identity, inheritance, inspiration and whether we can escape our past. The play spans a century of South London life - from 1919 to the present.

Set and performed in Bellingham’s historic Fellowship Inn, a Grade II listed pub famous for being the training ground of local hero Sir Henry Cooper before his iconic 1963 fight with Muhammad Ali, the show is created with and performed by professional actors and musicians alongside the Lewisham Community Chorus (LCC). The LCC is a collection of local residents who meet weekly at the 1920s purpose-built community pub working with professionals to create and perform new work. Previous work includes Our Street, performed at Lewisham’s Broadway Theatre in July 2024 and written with jazz singer songwriter Gwyneth Herbert, and Stories We Tell Ourselves, performed at the World Heart Beat Centre in central London and written with Thomas Guthrie, along with performances at the Phoenix Arts Theatre in Soho and locally in South East London.

Making his playwriting debut, Sunday Times best-selling author Rhik Samadder (I Never Said I Loved You) was embedded with the group for an entire year from 2025-2026.

The production marks the centenary of the Fellowship Inn originally built as a community hub for the Bellingham Estate which has seen local gigs from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers.
