Curiosity not Fear: Devising Theatre Masterclass

A practical, exploratory workshop for early-career and emerging theatre artists looking to create their own work.

Led by Anna Marsland—a director from Burnley specialising in new writing, collaborative theatre-making, non-traditional spaces, and access, with a focus on female, queer, and working-class stories. Anna has worked with the National Theatre, Almeida, RSC, Shakespeare's Globe, Royal Exchange, Chichester Festival Theatre, New Vic, Bath Theatre Royal, Theatre Royal Haymarket, Park Theatre, and Southwark Playhouse.

Supported by Laurence Baker—actor, acting teacher, and founder of The Public Theatre Workshop, a non-profit running affordable events for developing creatives in London.

Through play, improvisation, and creative exploration, you’ll:

Explore devising new material in a process designed to remove limitations and spark creative liberation
Embrace your identity as an artist
Tap into your imagination & the world around you as limitless sources of inspiration
Experiment across disciplines without waiting for permission
Gain confidence in defining and sharing your work
Connect with fellow artists & potential collaborators

No prior ideas necessary—just bring yourself, an open mind, and a willingness to explore.

Pay-What-You-Can Scheme

The Public Theatre Workshop works on the principle of providing equal and full access to creative development & actor training workshops.
We offer a Pay-What-You-Can option which is available to the fullest extent for any artist meeting one of the following criteria:

✔️ Anyone claiming income support
✔️ 18-25s whose parents or primary caregivers earn less than £30,000 per year
✔️ Full-time workers (40 hrs/week) earning below the London Living Wage
✔️ People living in or seeking social housing
✔️ Full or part-time carers
✔️ Anyone currently claiming asylum in the UK

If you qualify, simply get in touch & we will ask you to provide one piece of supporting evidence before attending the class.
