Come and celebrate a new era for Vintage’s iconic, thought-provoking classics with Libreria. We will be hosting an evening dedicated to one of the list’s lodestar authors, Roberto Bolaño.
Chaired by Nick Skidmore—publishing director at Vintage Classics—this lively discussion will feature acclaimed author Chris Power, who selected and introduced The Collected Short Stories of Roberto Bolaño, and award-winning Creative Director of Vintage Suzanne Dean. All will be discussing the writing of Roberto Bolaño and sharing the secrets to the updated design of the red spines and much more.
About our guests:
Chris Power is the author of a novel, A Lonely Man, and the story collection Mothers. His journalism and criticism have been published in various papers including the Guardian, the Sunday Times, the London Review of Books, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He also works as a broadcaster for BBC Radio 4. He lives in London.
Suzanne Dean has worked at Vintage, Penguin Random House, since 2000, and has been fortunate enough to create covers for iconic titles and bestsellers from The Handmaid’s Tale, Entangled Life and Sapiens to H is for Hawk, Atonement and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. She has worked with a wide range of authors including Haruki Murakami, Toni Morrison, Richard Powers, Ocean Vuong, Sunjeev Sahota and Julian Barnes.
Her designs have won several ABCD awards and she has given talks about book cover design at the Hay and Edinburgh festivals. The Handmaid’s Tale won The British Book Design and Production Award in 2018 and her illustration for Bluets by Maggie Nelson won the V&A Illustration Book Cover Award 2017.
In addition to collaborating and art directing her design team at Vintage, Suzanne designs between twenty to thirty titles at one time – which will all be at different stages of the design process. She loves reading and works hard to create original designs that express the essence of the manuscript while standing out in, and leading, the market. She enjoys working with a whole range of designers, typographers, illustrators and photographers.
Nick Skidmore is publishing Director of Vintage Classics, one of the world’s most-renowned Classics lists. In recent years, he has overseen the literary revival of authors such as Derek Jarman, Jacqueline Harman and Jack Hilton, as well as spearheaded the major re-publication of works by Toni Morrison, W G Sebald, Roberto Bolaño and Haruki Murakami. For Jonathan Cape, he edits and publishes contemporary authors, including Roddy Doyle, Colin Barrett and Richard Lloyd Parry.
