This class is for beginner and intermediate glassblowers looking to learn cold working techniques!
About this Event

This class is for the beginner to intermediate glassblower who wishes to be introduced to the techniques of cold working to refine and enhance what is made in the hot shop. Techniques will include wheel cutting and wheel & flexible shaft engraving, grinding, polishing, sandblasting and hand lapping. Although glassblowing will be a part of this workshop, a dialogue between drawing and hands-on work in both the hot shop and cold shop will help expand ideas and explore the relationship between hot and cold glass techniques.

Primary emphasis will be on the exploration and development of ideas not finished products and students will be encouraged to develop their own forms and directions. Hands on work will be

complemented by a short presentation on historical and contemporary cold worked glass. Beginning to intermediate glassblowing experience required.

What to Expect: Students can expect to watch a number of demonstrations and have time to practice coldworking on three objects using different techniques. Tools and materials will be provided. The cold shop equipment can be loud, and all equipment is water fed. Students should wear waterproof shoes, an apron, safety glasses, and ear protection are provided.  Clean-up time is included in the duration of class, and usually the last 20 minutes of class are dedicated to cleaning your workstation.  Read more about how to prepare for class on our Registration Info page.

Eligibility: Beginning to intermediate glassblowing experience required. Open to ages 14 and up.

We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at [email protected] if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.
