About this Event

This event is organised by the SMLC Gender and Sexualities Across Cultures research theme and is open to PGR students working on those topics.

Schedule:

13.30-14.30 Collage your thesis

14.30-15.00 Coffee, tea and networking

15.00-16.00 Publishing workshop

Collage your thesis (led by Qiunong Liu)

This is a collage-making session to reflect on theories in a creative and playful way. We will engage with key literature in gender and sexuality studies, and disrupt and rework them into collage poems, stories, or other forms of text. We consider theories as open to questioning and reimagining and explore how they can be put into conversation with our own research and case studies.

All materials will be prepared, including printed excerpts from some literature, and you are welcome to add your own words. After a 45-minute session where the participants make their own collage design, there will be an optional space for sharing and reflecting on how this creative process opens up new ways of thinking about the theories.

Publishing workshop (led by Dr Jonathan Evans)

This workshop aims to demystify the publishing process, focusing on publishing in high quality peer review journals, but also touching on book publication and other forms of dissemination such as blogs and writing for the public. Drawing on my own experience as a researcher, reviewer and deputy editor of a Q1 SSCI-indexed journal, we will discuss the stages of publishing, strategies for choosing the best outlets, how to deal with peer review, and how to get practice in lower stakes forms.
