About this Event
Most of us have heard classical music before, in films, weddings, concert halls, commercials, and dramatic scenes where someone is staring out a window in deep thought. We can feel when it sounds grand, tense, romantic, playful, or sad, yet many of us would struggle to explain what is actually happening inside the music.
In this lecture, Rae Gillmore will make classical music easier to hear, understand, and enjoy. Through listening examples, live playing demonstrations, and guided worksheets, she will break down the sounds, patterns, and choices that give classical music its emotion and structure.
The evening will introduce the instruments of the orchestra, the main eras of Western classical music, and the difference between melody and accompaniment, giving attendees a clearer way to listen without needing any prior musical training.
It is also designed for anyone who has ever thought about going to the symphony and wondered where to begin, what to choose, or how to follow what they are hearing once the music starts.
Rae Gillmore is a Juilliard-trained classical viola and violin performer and educator based in Toronto. She teaches students from young children to adult lifelong learners, with a particular interest in making classical music feel more accessible to people who are curious but unsure where to start.
