About this Event
Please note: Booking is Essential
One of London’s earliest suburbs, Whitechapel grew up along the Roman road linking Aldgate to Colchester. It was originally part of the parish of Stepney, but in the early fourteenth century a whitewashed chapel was established, and although the last church on this site was lost in the Blitz, it is still remembered in the name of the district. Pete Smith will trace Whitechapel’s extraordinary history, which spans three waves of immigration, close links to the sea and seafarers, two 19th century mass murders, a great hospital, and a historic bell foundry where both Big Ben and America’s Liberty Bell were cast.
