CINETOPIA SALON RETURNS! Our regular evening of apero, cinema, music and arts for the culturally curious!
In collaboration with the Edinburgh Film Guild we're proud to bring Jean Epstein's 1929 silent film FINIS TERRAE to the French Institute, alongside a performance of a newly composed original score by Edinburgh-based multi-instrumentalist Dan Abrahams and French drummer Phillipe Boudot.
Evening details:
➡️ 6pm – Apéro hour in the Salon with complimentary canapes
➡️7pm – Brief introduction from Edinburgh Film Guild
➡️7:05pm - Film screening with live accompaniment
➡️8:15pm – Conversations continue back in the Salon until 10pm
On a bleak island off the Breton coast “whose winter storms wipe out all forms of life”, four seaweed harvesters set up camp for the season. Tensions build quickly in this spartan environment, and a casual accident only serves to increase the feelings of mistrust between the men. Shot in a documentary-style, using local non-actors, Jean Epstein’s camera reveals an unforgiving, isolated land where the ungovernable natural world seems to reflect the suppressed energies of its characters.
The film’s highly poetic visual style, rich in atmosphere, and with a dual sense of menace and beauty, is an exciting invitation to the musicians whose folk-infused score will illuminate the thrilling elemental rhythm of this land and seascape.

DETAILS: Dir. Jean Epstein | France | 1929 | U | 1h 20m
