About this Event
Chester in the English Civil War.
The story of the English Civil War cannot be told without the dramatic role played by Chester, a city that became one of the most important Royalist strongholds in England. From 1642 until its surrender in 1646, Chester stood at the centre of the conflict in the north-west, enduring bombardment, hunger, and one of the longest sieges of the war.
This tour is designed to highlight the role of the city during the English Civil War. Step back into the 1640s, when Chester stood battered, starving, and divided.
Walk the ancient walls, and visit the famous breach, where both soldiers and civilians fought and died.
Walk to King Charles Tower — where Charles I stood and watched his army defeated at the Battle of Rowton Moor.
Hear dramatic true stories of loyalty, courage, betrayal, and survival as Parliament’s guns thundered against the city.
The tour is hosted by Mike Graham, an experienced local history enthusiast with a passion for the dramatic story of Chester during the English Civil War. Mike loves bringing the city's past to life with vivid stories, surprising facts, and the real human drama behind the history. He aims to make history engaging, vivid, and memorable for visitors of all ages.
