A rare chance to explore and learn about the changing history of symbols carved into the headstones of Australia's oldest Catholic Cemetery
About this Event

Renowned, local historian Judith Dunn OAM will inform and entertain you on this unique tour explaining how the carvings on headstones have changed with time.

At first the convicts and settlers lacked the time and skills to execute more than simple carvings on headstones. As growing food became less of an issue and the town developed, headstones became more decorative.

Stonemasons not only built houses but turned to monumental carving. At first still crude, the carvings gradually became more refined until the high Victorian era but after two world wars, lack of men and depression caused headstones to become smaller and were carved by machines.

Explore and enjoy these carvings as you stroll through St Patricks Cemetery, the oldest Catholic Cemetery in Australia.

Friends of St Patrick's Cemetery is thrilled once again to be part of the National Trust's 2025
