About this Event
The upcoming Department of Defense Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) Responsible AI (RAI) Community of Interest (COI) Meeting is scheduled for December 12th, 2024, from 3:00 to 4:00 PM Eastern Time (ET). In this session, we will host a discussion titled “AI and Energy Use: Implications for DoD Decision Makers” Featuring:
Panelists
- Prof. Costa Samaras, Director, Carnegie Mellon University Scott Institute for Energy Innovation
- Dr. Jared Dunnmon, Sr. Advisor to the Director, Defense Innovation Unit (DIU)
- Dr. Sarah Smith, Research Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab
Moderator
- Dr. Rachel Dzombak, Distinguished Service Professor, Carnegie Mellon University
The ubiquitous deployment of AI systems across the DoD will require significant amounts of energy which has implications for AI project scaling and costs. For example, GenAI inference currently requires 10x the energy of a traditional Google search – what does that mean for broad implementation of GenAI? This panel will examine designing and fielding AI systems that meet both performance and operational demands while not exceeding energy constraints. The conversation will explore the drivers behind AI's rising energy consumption, the energy demand and supply sides, and how considerations of size, weight and power (SWaP) can drive efficient AI. The goal of the panel is to share about the rapid developments in hardware and data centers as well as the energy supply required to provision today’s large models and what the changes mean for implementation of responsible AI.
The CDAO RAI division has created a Responsible AI COI to help facilitate adoption of RAI practices across the DoD, and to build a community around this work. The purpose of this RAI COI is to provide a voluntary forum for (1) sharing knowledge and best practices related to RAI in the defense context, (2) presenting in-progress RAI projects, (3) exploring technologies that advance RAI work, and (4) delivering self-defined outputs, such as processes or standards.
Membership of these meetings will include only personnel from the United States Department of Defense, United States Service Branches, and their partners in industry and academia. It is also restricted to those responsible for the acquisition, planning, implementation, sustainment, or usage of AI technologies and tools. Monthly meetings will be conducted, adhering to the Chatham House Rules.
