WEBINAR SUMMARY
In chapter 23 of Latinx/e in Social Work, Vol. II, the author, Jean Carlos Osorio, LCSW-R, CDBT, SIFI, talks about his experience with intergenerational and compounded traumas – such as homelessness, domestic violence, immigration, sexual abuse, and dysfunctional family dynamics. This led the author to attempt suicide multiple times.
Through education, understanding and by prioritizing his mental health, the author established his own private practice, became an advocate to create change to end the stigma surrounding mental health within the Latinx/e community.
In this workshop we will learn how to navigate suicidal ideation in a culturally humble lens and we will explore our own internal biases that we may have towards mental health. We will also use this chapter as a case study to explore what acceptance means and what embracing yourself as a whole may look like.
