Buzzed Words: The Grown-Up Spelling Bee, Supporting Open Books

By attending the Grown-Up Spelling Bee, you’re supporting literacy and book-access work across Chicago!

Open Books provides children’s literacy programs, including one-on-one reading practice, storytime in early-childhood centers, and parent/caregiver workshops. Open Books also gives children access to books by donating high-quality books to Chicago communities, and through the free Open Books Mobile and free children’s bookstore in Pilsen. The first three rounds of the Grown-Up Spelling Bee are trivia-style. Work with your team (or by yourself) to spell the words on paper. For the fourth round, the top three teams send their best speller to the front for a traditional, out-loud spelling bee, and to bring home glory for their team!

Plus, amazing prize bundles will be raffled off between spelling rounds. Raffle tickets are available to purchase through Eventbrite or in person at the event. $5 for 1 ticket, or $25 for 6 tickets.

Drinks will be available for purchase at Midwest Coast Brewing Company. Pizza will be available for purchase from a pop-up with Five Squared Pizza.

General admission ticket: $25 per person

You may form teams of up to 10 people (each person must purchase a ticket)

Raffle tickets: $5 for 1 ticket, or $25 for 6 tickets (purchase through Eventbrite or in person at the event)

Doors open at 6 p.m. The Spelling Bee begins at 7 p.m.

*Please be aware that a mix of seated and standing spots will be available. You are not guaranteed a seated spot.
