Burke Museum Collections Visit: Ancestral Sugpiaq Alutiiq ItemsWe are honored to invite Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) and Alaska Native community members to a guided collections visit at the Burke Museum in Seattle, Washington, to spend time with ancestral Alutiiq items held in the museum’s care.
This visit is an opportunity to engage directly with cultural belongings, observe materials, designs, and techniques, and to learn from one another in a respectful, community-centered setting. These sessions are intended to support cultural knowledge sharing, artistic learning, research, and reconnection.
Date: Friday, March 20
Location: Burke Museum, Seattle, WA
To ensure an intimate and meaningful experience, the visit will be offered in two small-group sessions, with a maximum of four participants per session.
Required Preparatory Meeting
All accepted participants will be required to attend a Zoom meeting prior to the visit. This meeting will cover visit expectations, museum protocols, cultural considerations, and provide space for questions and preparation. Details and the Zoom link will be shared with registered participants.
Session Schedule
Session 1
• 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Collections visit
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM: Group Lunch
Both sessions will come together for a shared lunch, creating time for conversation, reflection, and community connection.
Session 2
• 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM: Collections visit
Eligibility
Registration is open only to Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) and Alaska Native individuals. Space is very limited, and application is required.
