Building Trust: Icelandic Midwives and Polish MothersImproving Perinatal Care Through Cultural Understanding
You are warmly invited to a meeting for midwives working with Polish women during pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period, who would like to deepen their understanding of how to support better and connect with them.
This event is part of the project “Building Trust: Icelandic Midwives and Polish Mothers – Improving Perinatal Care Through Cultural Understanding”, funded by Þróunarsjóður innflytjendamála (2025).
About the project
The goal of the project is to build greater trust and understanding between Polish women living in Iceland and the Icelandic perinatal care system.
At the same time, the project aims to support midwives by offering insight into the needs and perspectives of Polish women - making everyday work easier and helping to provide more personalized and culturally sensitive care.
For many migrant women, the midwife is the “face of the system”.

• Understand how cultural differences can shape expectations - what may feel natural for Icelandic women can feel unfamiliar or confusing for Polish women

If you sometimes find that Polish women have different expectations around examinations or interventions this space is for you. We will explore why many Polish women expect more medical monitoring, and how to communicate when it is not clinically necessary in a way that helps women feel heard, understood and taken seriously.

Paulina Kołtan-Janowska - doula and childbirth educator
She supports Polish families in Iceland, helping them prepare for childbirth and, above all, understand and build trust in the Icelandic maternity care system.
She collaborates with Fæðingarheimili Reykjavíkur, leading birth preparation classes and support in Polish.
