It's true... i'll be leaving my beloved Wellington in mid-May to pursue to personal & career opportunities in Auckland. In celebration of my time in Wellington i'm going to be hosting a series of gigs to have fun with my friends, colleagues and loved ones before I go. All gigs are at our beloved watering hole - The Rogue & Vagabond. I'd love to see you!
Gig #1, Thursday 7th May 9:30pm- Funky Mama's Thursday Night Libation (free)
Funky Mama has been a staple in the Wellington music diet since its inception in 2016. Fresh from curing cases of Deep Vein Trombosis in Tauranga, they bring their signature sound that's influenced by deep funk, bouncy boogaloo & 80's house. Come and have a Thursday Night Libation and get your deep vein trombosis cured by the best in the biz.
Gig #2, Friday 8th May 9:30pm- Brazza! (free)
Brazza returns on Friday May 8ths with a full night of Brazilian grooves, funky rhythms, and pure summer energy. Featuring local experts and aficionados of Brazilian music: Fabiola Stevenson (Vocals), Félicien Houet (Guitar), Bryn van Vliet (Alto Sax), Duncan Taylor (Trombone), Peter Hamilton (Bass), Marcel Nogueira d'Eurydice (Pandeiro/Cavaquinho), and Sam MacKenzie (Drums).
Gig #3, Thursday 14th May 9:30pm - Brynzilian Big Band ($20 GA, $10 Students)
The Brynzilian Big Band is a 17-piece powerhouse jazz orchestra founded and led by saxophonist Bryn van Vliet. Based in Wellington, Bryn is a multi-disciplinary artist known for his dynamic career as an instrumentalist (saxophone, woodwinds, vocals), performer, composer, arranger, and educator. As a founding member of TOI and former lead alto saxophonist for the Rodger Fox Big Band, he has earned a reputation as a versatile and sought-after musician.
The Brynzilian Big Band presents fresh, vibrant compositions inspired by iconic Brazilian music styles such as Samba, Bossa Nova, and Forró. Bryn’s writing reflects his deep affection for Brazilian music, while honoring its traditional roots and spirit. Featuring 17 of Wellington’s finest musicians, the Brynzilian Big Band promises a performance that will make you dance, laugh, shout, cry — and maybe even hug your neighbour.
