About this Event
Brixton, street markets, covered arcades, and shops.
This walk explores the changing nature of Brixton as a town drawing people to shops for all kinds of goods for over 150 years. From a cross roads with a couple of houses and some market gardens, to South London’s biggest shopping centre by the 1920s, through to markets serving and run by people from around the world, especially the Caribbean. The development of shopping was one of the key elements in the development of Brixton and a vital part of its history.
Hints of each era and the many changes as we walk through the various markets and shopping areas. Feedback from one walker: “Truly fantastic. Best walking tour I’ve been on in London. Huge thanks”.
Included in the walk price of £5 is a copy of the book Brixton Markets. The walk starts from the corner of Beehive Place and Brixton Station Road, SW9 8PA at 2.30pm and takes around one and a half hours.
Booking is essential.
