About this Event
Hannah Agass, Learning and Engagement Manager at the Museum of the Order of St John will introduce us to William Hogarth’s father’s coffee shop that was located at St John’s Gate, Clerkenwell. This will be followed by an artist led workshop using coffee as the medium to create art.
Workshop
Inspired by the intellectual dedication of William Hogarth’s father’s coffee house to further the study of Latin, this workshop explores coffee and breath as mediums of exchange.
Using watercolour techniques with coffee and breath on paper, participants will create subtle, responsive marks that reflect the act of thinking, speaking, and connecting. The session invites a celebration of the coffeehouse as a space for shared enquiry and there will be an opportunity to drink coffee, create a breath portrait, as well as a playful opportunity to create breath prints.
About the artist
Jayne Wilton is a visual artist who explores the breath as a unit of exchange between people and their environments. Her practice uses darkroom processes with drawing, photography, video and sound to capture the usually invisible trace of breath as it moves across a surface.
