Maria is a highly accomplished and passionate leader in the State's housing and community services sector. Known as 'a business head with a social heart,' she has driven significant positive impact, particularly in affordable housing, over her 25-year career.
In Executive roles for the then Department for Families and Communities she led strategy, funding, and regulation of community and affordable housing, as well as reforms in homelessness and domestic violence over a period of unprecedented investment and growth.
As CEO of Common Ground Adelaide, Maria drove and oversaw the development of accommodation and support services for hundreds of South Australians. This included a $15.5 million apartment building in the city focusing on single parents with children, and a $10 million unit development in Port Augusta for Aboriginal people sleeping rough – both the first of this type in SA. Maria was later seconded as Director of Housing Strategy at Renewal SA, where she led the largest housing transfer in SA to community housing providers, significantly enhancing the sector's capacity for growth.
She became CEO of Junction in 2017 and has since led a period of significant expansion and impact. Under her leadership, the organisation's turnover reached $51 million in 2022/23, a 45% increase from 2017/18. She also established a $500 million affordable housing pipeline, delivering hundreds of much-needed homes for South Australians.
A single mother to three young adults, her commitment to lifting others 'up' and encouraging them to dig deep to 'back' their own capability and capacity is palpable.
Maria was an SA Telstra Business Woman of the Year finalist in 2019 and won UDIA SA’s Women in Leadership Award in 2021.
