Bram Stoker's Dracula at The Revival House PerthIn 1897 London, young solicitor Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) travels to Transylvania to finalize a real estate transaction with Count Dracula (Gary Oldman), leaving behind his fiancée Mina Murray (Winona Ryder). At the Count's remote castle, Jonathan discovers his host is an ancient vampire who imprisons him while departing for England with diabolical purpose. Dracula has seen a photograph of Mina and believes her to be the reincarnation of his lost love Elisabeta, for whom he renounced God centuries earlier. In London, Dracula begins seducing Mina while feeding on her friend Lucy (Sadie Frost), whose strange illness baffles her suitors. When vampire hunter Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) identifies the supernatural threat, he rallies Lucy's fiancés and the escaped Jonathan to stop Dracula. But Mina finds herself torn between her human life and an inexplicable connection to the immortal creature who claims to have loved her across the centuries.
Director Francis Ford Coppola reimagines Dracula as operatic gothic romance, employing old-fashioned theatrical techniques—forced perspective, matte paintings, in-camera effects—to create a feverish visual spectacle. The 1992 film is a riot of color, shadow, and sexual symbolism, with costume designer Eiko Ishioka creating extraordinary period costumes that won an Oscar. Gary Oldman delivers multiple performances as Dracula transforms from ancient grotesque to romantic figure to demonic beast, while Anthony Hopkins brings theatrical relish to Van Helsing. Wojciech Kilar's romantic score and Michael Ballhaus's sumptuous cinematography create atmosphere dripping with blood and desire. Coppola treats the vampire myth as tragic love story and fever dream simultaneously, resulting in cinema that's excessive, sensual, and unforgettable. The film reclaims Stoker's name while taking wild liberties with his novel, creating something entirely its own.
