'On Burnley Road: Class, race and politics in a northern English town' by Mike Makin-Waite examines the themes of 'empire, de-industrialisation, racial inequality, policing, politics and class division' through the lens of the rise of British National Party in Burnley, and the turbulent years following the ‘northern town disturbances’ of 2001.The book is the inside story of these developments, written by the council worker responsible for promoting good race relations in Burnley.

Ekua Bayunu is an artist and community organiser in Moss Side, and newly-elected Labour Councillor for Hulme, Manchester. She is Chair of Greater Manchester Tenants Union anti-racism committee.
Vik Chechi-Ribeiro is Manchester Momentum Trade Union Liaison Officer, vice-president of Manchester NEU, member of the NEU's Black Workers Committee in the North West.
Mike Makin-Waite worked in local government for over thirty years. He led Burnley Council’s work to promote community cohesion and good race relations during the decade when the BNP was represented on the council.
Looking back on the ‘northern town disturbances’ of 2001, the trauma of deindustrialisation and the rise of right-wing populism, his new book argues that events in Burnley were a harbinger of social and political shifts that have now resulted in Brexit and Labour’s loss of ‘red wall’ seats.
Makin-Waite’s first book, Communism and Democracy, was praised by reviewers as ‘fresh and unflinching … ‘highly readable and stimulating’. He has written for the journals Soundings, Twentieth Century Communism, Socialist History, Radical Philosophy, New Humanist, and Historical Materialism.
