On Thursday May 14, here at HRL something with a distinct late-night feel is happening! Bob Wiseman slips onto his accustomed seat in front of a piano and Lily Frost straps on her guitar. Yes, they’re on the same stage but each solo and nicely-badly behaved! This is Night Owls: a double bill for people who do their best thinking in the special light of the night. But the clock always tells the truth: the show starts at 8:00 PM, not midnight. But night isn’t a time so much as a feeling: when a powerful performance starts, the room sharpens and the odd, bright thoughts finally coalesce into a sentence. Night owls don’t obey schedules; they follow the ideas that show up once the world starts powering down.
Bob Wiseman (founding member of Blue Rodeo) is a songwriter with a reputation for precision and nerve. He’s witty, tender, disarmingly direct and allergic to puff. His songs don’t pose as answers. They simply ask the good questions and then land with the kind of punch that makes an audience laugh and then go quiet.
Lily Frost moves in a different weather system: unique songwriting, luminous vocals and a stage presence that can quickly turn a room into a listening space. Her songs arrive like cinematic scenes - intimate, stylish, and slightly uncanny. It’s music that holds beauty and bite at the same time.
Night Owls isn’t a blend, but it isn’t a battle. It’s difference by design: two artists, two full sets, two distinct sonic worlds, connected by craft, risk and the shared belief that the real work begins when the day loosens its grip.
