Timings: Class: 15:00 - 17:30
Break: 17:30 - 19:00
Social: 19:00 - 10:45
Join us for a relaxed, welcoming all-levels blues dance workshop rooted in connection, rhythm and groove. The session is meant for any level of dancer interested in finding out more about blues dance, and furthering their learning on connection - a key component which blues dance builds on, and which we can take back into other dances.
Blues music is widely varied, from slow emotive ballads, through raunchy sass, to turbo charged shuffles. In this workshop we’ll stick to the slow to medium tempo, and focus on connecting to our bodies, the music and our partners. And, we’ll be hosting a cosy social the same night - perfect opportunity to practice your new skills in a warm and supportive environment.
What to expect: Simple shapes and grounded movement in a supportive, inclusive space. We’ll guide you both solo and with partners, and will encourage switching roles throughout. Please wear something comfortable that allows you to move and breathe freely - and shoes which allow you to swivel with ease on the balls of your feet.
Evening Social Dance - included
Slow it down at Rhythm Itch’s Cosy Social. This special blues dance edition will create a welcoming and inclusive dance floor. Whether you’re new to blues dance (maybe you came to our workshop earlier in the day!) or already love its variety and depth, expect a night of relaxed dancing and connection.
We may release social only tickets closer to the date, depending on demand and space.
Expect blues music with warmth and texture - from slow, soulful sounds to funkier grooves which will stay with you long after the night ends. Come for the music, stay for the people, and settle into a night that feels calm, connected and cosy.
Shared roots: Blues, Jazz & Swing Blues, jazz and Lindy Hop all come from the same Black American social dance traditions. These forms grew and evolved in conversation with Blues music as tools for expression, resilience, joy and social connection within communities.
The history and evolution of Blues music and dance is rich and complex, we'll only just scratch the surface in this workshop but your teachers will happily be able to provide further resources, videos and opportunities to learn and share after the class.
About your teachers
Tris loves dancing and teaching dancing, and this comes across in every aspect of his teaching! He fell in love with the blues in 2012, set up his local scene in Bristol in 2013, and since then has travelled widely, teaching to rave reviews across Europe, from Slovenia to Dundee. He’s most known for advocating dancers learn to lead and follow, for his soft and precise leads, and his yummy ballroom’ skills. Expect a friendly relaxed style, and an infectious passion for blues dancing - and for him to try to make you all into partners he wants to dance with.
Favourite Blues Style: Depends on his mood!
Favourite Blues Song (currently): If I can’t sell it - Ruth Brown
Bex is a little newer to blues, after falling in love with the dance three years ago. Based here in Brum, she takes every opportunity to travel, dance, learn and share. She teaches with care and warmth, inviting dancers to slow down, tune in and find ease and expression in the music.
Favourite Blues style: toss up between anything danced close embrace or ballroomin
Favourite Blues song (currently): I’d rather go blind - Koko Taylor
